ASUS ZenFone Max Plus heading to North America with Face Unlock feature

It looks like being able to unlock your phone with your face is going to become the go-to biometric security measure in smartphones, and ASUS is ready to jump on the bandwagon.

Announced today during the CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, ASUS has confirmed that it is bringing the ZenFone Max Plus smartphone to North America. The handset boasts a 5.7-inch 2160×1080 display with an aspect ratio of 18:9, putting it right in line with other flagship smartphones on the market with similarly-sized displays and aspect ratios.

There is a MediaTek MT6750T octa-core processor under the hood that’s clocked at 1.5GHz, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of built-in storage. There are a pair of cameras on the back, one being a 16MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture while the other is a wide-angle 8MP unit with an f/2.0 aperture.

There is a fingerprint reader on the back of the ZenFone Max Plus, but the handset also features Face Unlock, which ASUS says “gives users a quick, secure and convenient alternative to the rear fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone when wearing gloves or in inclement weather conditions.”

The ZenFone Max Plus is running Android 7.0 Nougat underneath ASUS’s proprietary Zen UI 4.0. The battery measures in at 4130mAh, and ASUS says it can last up to 26 days on standby.

It will be available in North America in two colors, Deepsea Black and Azure Silver, and it will cost $229 when it arrives this February.
