It’s the end of the world as we know it (and we feel ABJECT PANIC)
REM couldn’t have known how true those words would be today, as millions of people woke up this morning wondering if their phone was broken, shocked by something they had always taken for granted: the color of the Spotify icon.
From a softer, forest-like green to a more vibrant green, the icon has people in a downright panic. We’re talking anxiety attacks worldwide. The internet is outraged at the unsolicited color change, spouting threats to switch to Apple Music once it is released. A Twitter riot has broken out, with only a few defending the change.
Oh Spotify, thinking you could do this quietly…
Why does this even matter? It is only a slight (emphasis: slight) color change. Why are folks so upset? Perhaps in this wild and crazy world that can’t sit still for one second, we rely more than we think on our trustworthy icons. We recognize them like the back of our hand, and the slightest hesitation of our fingers tapping one to open it seems like…betrayal.
This change came after a rollout of new Spotify updates, including Now playlists and Spotify Running. Perhaps users were overwhelmed – too much all at once? Their beloved music listening platform evolving before their very eyes?
Take heed, app developers. Choose your icon wisely, because you are stuck with it. Forever.
